Mebaeso is a small ryokan in Yufuin with eighteen rooms. The shared bath is split by gender, with deep granite tubs indoors, and steps outside to an open-air bath that looks toward Mt. Yufu through the trees. Two more open-air baths can be reserved for private use, just as deep and well filled, good for a family or small group. Rooms in the higher categories come with a bath of their own, either a Shigaraki ceramic tub or a rock-built one with the same mountain view, both filled straight from the spring rather than recirculated. The ryokan also grows its own rice for the kitchen, from planting to harvest, and it shows in how they talk about the food.
