Heated tap water, not a natural hot spring
The hostel is not supplied with onsen water; only a shared shower is available on-site.
Open-air outdoor bath
Enclosed indoor bathing area
No bathtub on-site at all, shower only; a 2024 review confirms 「風呂 なし。シャワーのみ」.
Private onsen bath in guest rooms, for overnight guests only
Restaurant or dining open to visitors (not just hotel meal plans)
Meals are a reservation-only order system for lodging guests (curry dinner / onigiri breakfast), not a public restaurant open to outside visitors.
On-site or nearby parking available
Sounkyo hostel is a simple guest house a short walk from the Sounkyo Gorge cable car and the Kurodake trailhead, with gender-separated dorm rooms and tatami-floored private rooms sharing a common toilet and shower. There's no bath on site, just a shared shower, but the hostel hands out discount coupons for day-use bathing at a few hot-spring hotels within a short walk, so a soak in Sounkyo Onsen is still easy to arrange. Dinner (a curry set) and breakfast (a rice-ball box) are reservation-only, and the hostel runs seasonally through the warmer months. Guests mostly mention the friendly staff and the easy, homey atmosphere rather than the rooms themselves.
