Fudokan Oyanoyu

Spring chemistry and what it does, with the research behind it.

小谷揚湯組合源泉Oya Pumping Cooperative Source

硫SulfateCalcium-Sodium Sulfate spring

A calcium-sodium sulfate spring, carried on the certificate under the older classification of a glauber-salt and gypsum water. Sulfate makes up close to four-fifths of the anions, which gives the bath its settled, mineral-rich body, while the weakly alkaline chemistry keeps it soft on the skin. Metasilicic acid above 50 mg/kg puts it within Japan's beauty-water family, and at 1,213 mg/kg of dissolved solids it is moderately mineralized with noticeable body.

Good for

Aches & joints

Warmth eases stiffness and raises the pain threshold. Radon and sulfate springs show the strongest evidence for joint and muscle pain.

stiff shoulders

Circulation

Skin-absorbed CO₂ and hydrogen sulfide relax the vessel walls; carbon-dioxide springs can raise peripheral blood flow several-fold.

tired legs

Smooth skin

Bicarbonate and alkalinity gently lift dead keratin while silica hydrates, leaving skin smooth. This is the basis of the beautifying-water (bijin-no-yu 美人の湯) reputation.

dry, rough skin

Cuts

Mineral-rich chloride, sulfate and sulfur waters have a long-recorded soothing effect on minor cuts and slow-healing skin.

minor wounds

Recovery

Warmth and buoyancy lower stress markers and improve sleep; habitual bathing is linked to lower rates of depression.

fatigue, stress

Full composition

The bar is each ion's share of charge (mval%) within its group; over 20% names the spring. Gases, silica and trace metals are measured by mass only.

芦ノ牧温泉混合泉Ashinomaki Onsen Blended Source

硫SulfateCalcium-Sodium Sulfate-Chloride spring · +Chloride

A blended source: five wells of the Ashinomaki hot spring field are combined, and the sample is drawn from the storage tank rather than at a wellhead. The water is a calcium-sodium sulfate-chloride spring — sulfate gives it quiet body while the chloride share adds a salty edge and the heat-retaining feel that comes with it. Weakly alkaline and soft on the skin, it carries 61 mg/kg of metasilicic acid, enough to place it in Japan's beauty-water family, over 1,252 mg/kg of dissolved solids in total — moderately mineralized, with noticeable body.

stiff shoulders

Circulation

Skin-absorbed CO₂ and hydrogen sulfide relax the vessel walls; carbon-dioxide springs can raise peripheral blood flow several-fold.

tired legs

Warming

Salt forms a film on the skin that slows heat loss, so the warmth lingers long after the bath (the classic heat-keeping water, netto 熱の湯).

Smooth skin

Bicarbonate and alkalinity gently lift dead keratin while silica hydrates, leaving skin smooth. This is the basis of the beautifying-water (bijin-no-yu 美人の湯) reputation.
