Kokun Kekun has an indoor bath and an open-air rotenburo, one each for men and women, fed by hot spring water that runs fresh from the source, cloudy brown and faintly salty on the skin. There's no sauna and no mixed bathing. In winter, when drift ice comes in off Utoro, a separate open-air bath opens for private 60-minute soaks so guests can watch the ice while they bathe. The wooden inn used to run as the town's kokumin-shukusha (国民宿舎), a public lodging house, and that plain, no-frills feel is still there: simple tatami rooms look out over either the forest or a sunset on the sea. It only opens for part of the year, roughly the February drift-ice season, Golden Week, and June through October.
