みやこ Miyako

Miyako is a small ryokan of sixteen rooms on a hillside above Gero Onsen, and most of the suites and all four detached cottages come with their own open-air bath, so guests can bathe on their own schedule. The shared bathhouse pairs an indoor bath with a garden rotenburo floored in binchotan charcoal, and there are two free private baths, a pottery tub and a stone tub, plus a third private bath that costs extra and needs booking. The water is a smooth, alkaline spring, the kind Gero is known for, that leaves skin feeling soft rather than sharp or mineral-heavy. The cottages each keep their own mood: one is built around stained glass and old reclaimed wood with a Taisho-era (大正) feel, others are quieter and more spare. The inn sits just below Gero Onsen Gassho Village (下呂温泉合掌村), a short walk from the hot spring town but away from its main street.
