Gettouan is a ryokan tucked into the hills above Yufuin, built as 18 separate cottages instead of one hotel block, and every cottage has its own open-air bath filled with mild, gentle spring water. A separate shared bathhouse (indoor and outdoor sections, split by gender) looks out toward Mount Yufu, and guests in the Bekkan (別館) special rooms also get a private open-air bath along the Shirataki (白滝) river. The building where guests are received is a farmhouse about three hundred years old, moved here from Yamanashi with its heavy old beams intact, and a suspension bridge carries guests from there to the cottages. Reviews consistently mention the quiet and the staff's attentiveness more than any single feature.
