About
Nonohanatei Komurasaki is a five-room ryokan in Shimoda, and each room has its own open-air bath facing a private garden, plus an indoor washing bath with a shower. There's no communal bathhouse, only the room baths, and the water runs straight from the spring rather than being recirculated, so you can soak whenever you like. It comes from Rentaiji Onsen (蓮台寺温泉), one of four springs that feed the Shimoda hot spring area, and it's soft water that's gentle on the skin. Local lore credits its discovery to Gyoki (行基), a Nara-period monk. The inn keeps to an old-fashioned, unhurried rhythm. Dinner and breakfast are both brought to the room rather than served in a dining hall, and a small lounge greets arriving guests with tea and sweets. Guests often mention how quiet it feels, with birdsong and rustling leaves carrying into the bath at dawn, though the inn sits close enough to the street that some traffic noise gets through too.
