Ibusuki Phoenix Hotel has been receiving guests since the 1960s and sits on the Kagoshima coast. The signature experience here is the indoor sunayu (砂むし, sand bath), where guests lie buried in heated sand year-round, rain or shine. The large communal bath includes a cave-style outdoor section shaded by rubber trees, with the men's and women's sides rotating each morning. Two private family baths are also on offer. All guest rooms have their own onsen bath fed by the same faintly salty spring water.
