Akanudani Onsen

860. Akanudani Onsen (赤怒谷温泉), Okuhida Onsen, Nagano ★ A wild onsen. Turn left off the car tunnel onto the old road. Walk a little way along it and you can see steam coming straight up from the road, and from the slope on the left and below, steam will be coming from a pipe sticking out. From this point, you can already see the onsen by the river below. If you keep going along the old road, there is a blocked bridge to the other bank. Before the bridge, you can go down one level to the river, there used to be a rope there according to older information, but it is not too hard to get down without it. After that, take the lower path back toward the pipe from which the steam was coming, the onsen itself is under that pipe. The steam and water from the pipe come out randomly, sometimes it steams strongly, sometimes the water flow almost stops, so you cannot stand right next to it and need to be careful. In essence, there are two baths, both in a roughly acceptable state. The water is dirty if you stir up the sediment, and there are lots of old dirty leaves on the bottom. The baths themselves are small, if you bring mops or shovels with you, you could clean them in a short time. The view in both directions is great, the river stretches off in one direction, structures are in the other, and there is forest all around. 1. One bath is in rock. The water is clear. The temperature is like a layered cake, about 20 degrees at the bottom, 34 in the middle, and 45 at the surface. 2. The second bath is in rock. The water is clear. The temperature is about 25 degrees at the bottom and 40 at the surface. An authentic place. It is not too hard to get there, but ideally you should go with cleaning and clearing in mind from the start, so that the place can really show its potential. 11.03.2026
