About

Soumeian is a small ryokan in the Kusatsu onsen town, just four rooms, built around two private charter baths instead of a shared bathhouse: Tanzaku-no-yu (短冊の湯) and Origami-no-yu (折紙の湯), both fed by the strongly acidic Bandaiko (万代鉱) spring. The water is clear and colorless, with the light sting you'd expect from an acidic source. There's no booking system: whichever bath is free is yours, and you can go back as many times as you like during your stay. It's a breakfast-only inn, no dinner is served, so evenings are for eating out in Kusatsu and mornings are for a slow breakfast built around Gunma ingredients; stay two nights and a Chinese-style breakfast is offered as an alternative. The inn was recently renovated and keeps baby baths and futons on hand for families traveling with small children.
