Genbei-ya is a small minshuku above Suzaki fishing port in Shimoda, with one indoor onsen bath that guests take in turn, privately, rather than a shared communal bath. The spring is a simple, alkaline water that feels smooth on the skin and runs properly hot. Dinner and breakfast, built around the day's catch from Suzaki, come straight to your room. The inn traces back to the first minshuku on the Izu peninsula, from a time when this fishing town had nowhere else to put up traveling merchants passing through. Rooms facing the water can catch the fishing boats heading out at dawn.
