Hokokukan draws Nigayu — the certificate's name for it means "bitter water" — a naturally free-flowing source at Manza, classified as an acidic, sulfur-bearing sodium sulfate-chloride spring of the hydrogen sulfide type. The acidity is sharp enough to prickle on the skin, and the unmistakable rotten-egg note of H₂S rises straight off the water; it looks colorless and clear, yet carries a heavy load of free hydrogen sulfide. The source ranks among Japan's hottest natural springs, and a generous 158.7 mg/kg of metasilicic acid leaves the kind of thin silica film that makes skin feel noticeably smoother afterwards.

About

The star here is a large mixed open-air bath (konyoku rotenburo, 混浴露天風呂) filled with milky bluish-white sulfur water, high up in the Manza Onsen area. The spring flows in unfiltered and the colour and texture of the water draw people back repeatedly. A separate women-only open-air bath is also available. The inn is simple and a little dated, but the water is the whole point.

809. Hokokukan, Manza Onsen, Gunma ★★ I visited for a higaeri. With the Manza tegata, it was ¥500, regular price ¥800. Higaeri is listed from 08:30 to 16:30 (last entry at 15:30). 1. Large outdoor rectangular mixed bath. The water is cloudy white-blue, with lime deposits. Temperature: 44.5-45.5. 2. Indoor men's bath. The water is cloudy white-blue, with lime deposits. Temperature: 42. It is comfortable to breathe inside. A great atmospheric place, and it even has a mixed bath. Very old and timeworn, but in a good way. Recommended to visit. 15.01.2026
