Water profile

Shogetsu

Spring chemistry and what it does, with the research behind it.

SimpleSodium Chloride spring

An alkaline simple thermal spring fed from Gero Onsen's Koda pump station. At pH 9.4 the water is alkaline enough to feel slippery and soap-like on the skin, placing it squarely in Japan's beauty-water family, while its light mineralization — 353.9 mg/kg of dissolved solids — keeps it gentle and undemanding on the body. Metasilicic acid at 66.7 mg/kg leaves the kind of thin silica film that makes skin feel noticeably smoother afterwards. The posted analysis names autonomic nervous system instability, insomnia and depressed mood as the spring-type-specific indications, which marks this as water for a long, unhurried soak.

Good for

Aches & joints

Warmth eases stiffness and raises the pain threshold. Radon and sulfate springs show the strongest evidence for joint and muscle pain.

stiff shoulders

On the certificate:Muscle stiffness associated with motor paralysis

Smooth skin

Bicarbonate and alkalinity gently lift dead keratin while silica hydrates, leaving skin smooth. This is the basis of the beautifying-water (bijin-no-yu 美人の湯) reputation.

dry, rough skin

Recovery

Warmth and buoyancy lower stress markers and improve sleep; habitual bathing is linked to lower rates of depression.

fatigue, stress

On the certificate:ConvalescenceFatigue recoveryGeneral health improvement
