Shogetsu is a 21-room ryokan on a hillside above Gero Onsen, one of Japan's three noted hot spring towns. The main bath, Taketori Monogatari, pairs a glass-walled indoor pool with a hinoki (cypress) open-air bath looking out over the town and the Hida river, and a separate building along a mountain stream holds two private open-air baths, Koyo (紅葉) and Wakaba (若葉). Several room types come with their own private open-air bath as well. The spring water is soft and smooth, almost silky on the skin. The inn sits high enough that the town's lights spread out below the windows at night. Meals are kaiseki, served course by course in a private dining room, with the menu changing by the month.
