775. Nioson Plaza, Kinugawa Onsen, Tochigi ★★ A place with an onsen boat. I went for a higaeri for 700. Higaeri is listed from 09:00 to 21:00. Inside there is an area where you can fish. A few cats hang around nearby, and one of them cleverly snatched a fish that tourists had caught and ran off with it. There are three separate baths available: 1. Onsen boat. There is a view of the trees and the slope. The water is clear, temperature 38. 2. Corner outdoor bath with clear water. View of the trees through the fence. 3. Indoor bath. The water is clear, temperature 40. It is fine to breathe inside. A budget place in terms of condition, but original and memorable. Recommended for a visit. 11.01.2026

An older hotel in the Kinugawa Onsen area with multiple bathing options and views over the gorge. The mixed bathing here requires a bathing garment (湯浴み衣, yuamigi), which keeps things relaxed. The building is dated but the water and the views are genuinely good, and the setting above the river is hard to beat for the price.
