Two communal baths sit on the top floor of this Hakone-Yumoto ryokan, about 20 meters above the Sukumo river, so you soak looking down at the water and the wooded slope of Mount Yusaka. Men and women swap the two rooms on a schedule rather than sharing one. Alongside them are three private open-air tubs, Kumo (雲), Hoshi (星) and Tsuki (月), each finished in a different material (cypress, stone, marble) and booked first-come at check-in rather than ahead of time. The alkaline spring water is soft and gentle on the skin. Hakone-Yumoto is one of the old Hakone Nanayu bathing towns, known since the Edo period. Day use here only comes bundled with a meal plan; there's no bath-only drop-in.
