A blend of six Shima Onsen sources — Shinkoku-no-yu, Tsubame-no-yu, Daisan-no-yu, Bosatsu-no-yu, Kakashibashishita-no-yu and Taki-no-yu — gathered in an underground storage tank before it reaches the baths. It is a sodium-calcium chloride-sulfate water: weakly alkaline and soft on the skin, moderately mineralized at 1,490 mg/kg dissolved solids, with the salty, heat-retaining character of a chloride spring and sulfate adding quiet body. Metasilicic acid runs to 105 mg/kg, enough to leave the thin silica film that places this water in Japan's beauty-water family. The sample was taken at a bath inlet rather than the wellhead; the posted disclosure states the tubs are neither recirculated nor chlorinated — the water is drained and refilled daily — with plain water added only when the bath runs too hot.

About

The open-air baths here sit right on the Shimagawa river, and the view is the main draw. There are two rotenburo (露天風呂) and one indoor bath, all running on kakenagashi (free-flowing spring water, not recirculated). Some upper-floor rooms come with a semi-outdoor in-room onsen. Day-use bathing is also available on a 90-minute slot basis.

796. Shima Yamaguchikan, Shima Onsen, Gunma (pt.1) ★★★ I booked a duplicate reservation. There is a bath swap between men and women. There is a day-use option for ¥1 000 from 12:00 to 15:00, but with day-use access is only to one of the rotenburo. The cost of booking a simple single room without meals in the off-season was very cheap for this place. There was little interaction with the service, but everything was decent, and there was an announcement about a performance in the evening. A great selection of different cool baths. A top place, ideally you should stay overnight or use a duplicate reservation, because day-use gives too limited an experience of the facility's full potential. 13.01.2026 14.01.2026

796. Shima Yamaguchikan, Shima Onsen, Gunma (pt.3) ★★★ 3. Second set of baths, alternating for men and women. 3.1. Outdoor bath. Great view of the trees and the river. In the evening, soft lighting is turned on on the opposite bank, which makes the view from the bath even better. The bath itself is divided into two sections, and at the far end there is a huge stone with characters carved on it, and to the side there is a shrine, with a staircase that starts right from the rotenburo. Very strong atmosphere. The water is clear, temperature 40-42. 3.2. Indoor bath. The water is clear, temperature 41. It is comfortable to breathe inside. 13.01.2026 14.01.2026

A beautiful ryokan with an excellent rotenburo right by the river without solid fences. The free public baths and Sekizenkan don't have rotenburo, so this one made up for it.
