A sodium-calcium chloride spring rising unaided at Shima, with sulfate adding quiet body to the water. The pH is neutral and the mineralization moderate at 1,880 mg/kg, so the water has noticeable substance without any sharpness. A generous 133 mg/kg of metasilicic acid puts it in Japan's beauty-water family: the silica leaves a thin film that makes skin feel smoother once you are out of the bath.

Salt forms a film on the skin that slows heat loss, so the warmth lingers long after the bath (the classic heat-keeping water, nettō 熱の湯).

Skin-absorbed CO₂ and hydrogen sulfide relax the vessel walls; carbon-dioxide springs can raise peripheral blood flow several-fold.

竜宮の湯Shima Onsen Ryugu no Yu

ChlorideSodium-Calcium Chloride spring

One of Japan's hottest natural sources — the water surfaces unaided at 75.9 °C — feeding a sodium-calcium chloride spring. Neutral in pH and salty enough to hold heat well after the bath, it carries 2,510 mg/kg of dissolved solids, giving the water real body. Metasilicic acid runs to 174 mg/kg, which places it squarely in Japan's beauty-water family: the silica leaves a thin moisturizing film and skin feels noticeably smoother afterwards.
