A blended source — three Shima Onsen springs, Yu-no-Izumi-no-Yu, Yamadori-no-Yu and Gomuso-no-Yu, combined into calcium-sodium sulfate water. The sulfate lends a settled, mineral body, while the alkaline reading gives the slippery finish that places it in Japan's beauty-water family. Metasilicic acid runs high enough to leave a thin silica film, so skin feels noticeably smoother afterwards. The posting states the bath is run as untreated source flow: no dilution, no reheating, no recirculation and no disinfection.

Gomuso no Yu (御夢想の湯) is a small communal bath in Shima Onsen, traditionally regarded as the place where the spring first appeared. According to local lore, a retainer of the Heian warrior Minamoto no Yorimitsu (源頼光) was praying through the night on this spot when a deity appeared in a dream and promised a spring that would cure all ailments. The water rose on waking. The current wooden bathhouse was built in 2006. Inside, a compact indoor bath faces a wide window looking out at the forested hillside. The water is colorless and clear. An outdoor foot bath sits just beside the building. Entry is free by donation; soap and shampoo are not permitted inside.

792. Gomuso-no-yu, Shima Onsen, Gunma ★ A small onsen. The admission fee is left to the visitor's discretion. The stated hours are 09:00 to 15:00. Small indoor bath. The water is clear, temperature 44.5. It is easy to breathe inside. A decent place. 13.01.2026

Free, cozy, clean, kakenagashi, river visible from the window. What more do you need? A very nice temperature of 45 degrees that really warms you from the inside. Open 9:00-15:00.
