十王堂の湯Juodo-no-yu Spring

SulfurSodium-Calcium Sulfate spring

A simple sulfur spring rising in Nozawa Onsen village, Nagano. It surfaces at 71.9 °C — among Japan's hotter natural sources — colorless and clear at the spout, but carrying a strong hydrogen sulfide note and a sulfurous taste. Dissolved solids are light at 945 mg/kg, yet metasilicic acid runs to 110 mg/kg; paired with a mildly alkaline pH, that silica leaves the soft, smoothing finish that places the water in Japan's beauty-water family.

Good for

Skin conditions

Sulfur and acidic waters are antibacterial and keratolytic, studied for atopic dermatitis and psoriasis.

atopic skin, eczema

Circulation

Skin-absorbed CO₂ and hydrogen sulfide relax the vessel walls; carbon-dioxide springs can raise peripheral blood flow several-fold.

tired legs

Aches & joints

Warmth eases stiffness and raises the pain threshold. Radon and sulfate springs show the strongest evidence for joint and muscle pain.

stiff shoulders

Smooth skin

Bicarbonate and alkalinity gently lift dead keratin while silica hydrates, leaving skin smooth. This is the basis of the beautifying-water (bijin-no-yu 美人の湯) reputation.

dry, rough skin

Cuts

Mineral-rich chloride, sulfate and sulfur waters have a long-recorded soothing effect on minor cuts and slow-healing skin.

minor wounds

Recovery

Warmth and buoyancy lower stress markers and improve sleep; habitual bathing is linked to lower rates of depression.

fatigue, stress

Take care

Sensitive-skin caution

Strongly acidic or sulfur-rich water can sting broken, atopic-flare, or dry elderly skin. Ease in slowly and rinse off if it stings.

broken or dry skin

大釜混合(御嶽山)Ogama Blended Spring (Ontakesan)

SulfurSodium-Calcium Sulfate spring · +Sulfate

A blended source in Nozawa Onsen village, Nagano — the board records it as Ogama Mixed (Ontakesan) — classified as a sulfur-bearing sodium-calcium sulfate spring. It surfaces at 78.2 °C, among Japan's hottest natural sources, colorless and clear with a faint hydrogen sulfide note, the sulfate lending a quiet, settled body. At pH 8.8 the water is properly alkaline, and 121.9 mg/kg of metasilicic acid adds the slippery finish of Japan's beauty-water family. The bathing indications printed on the same board follow the chemistry closely: chronic eczema and lichen, seborrheic skin conditions, chronic pyoderma and persistent itching.
