The hotel's own milky water — a cream-coloured, cloudy acidic sulfur spring that rises at 72 °C, placing it among the hotter natural sources in Japan. The acidity gives a faint prickle on the skin while the sulfur accounts for the opacity. The posted sheet lists its documented uses as neuralgia, diabetes, hypertension, arteriosclerosis, chronic eczema, chilblains, cuts and motor paralysis, and presents the water as what fills the hotel's private open-air baths.

Okushiobara Kougen Hotel is a small, 24-room hotel up in the hills of Okushiobara Arayu Onsen (奥塩原新湯温泉), a quiet corner of the wider Shiobara Onsenkyo hot-spring area, at around 1,000 meters elevation. The spring is a milky white, sulfur-scented water shared with a few neighboring inns, kept flowing fresh from the source without heating, added water, or chlorination (kakenagashi, 掛け流し). Bathing is in gender-separated indoor and outdoor baths, the indoor one with oak tubs, plus four private baths you can book on your own: three open-air (one cypress, one ceramic, one local Mashiko pottery) and a barrier-free bath with a wide window onto the forest. Shiobara Onsenkyo goes back some 1,200 years, and Okushiobara Arayu has long been used for hot-spring recuperation stays (toji, 湯治).

Currently here, a very pleasant place. Subtle hydrogen sulfide smell, milky water. There's a choice of private baths for 1000 yen, almost all outdoor. The rooms and onsen have been freshly renovated. There's a golf club nearby with very affordable prices — it's currently closed, but the ski resort is open. Sorry, this is my first report :)
