Kyousen is an eight-room ryokan built into the cliffside above the Tenryu River gorge in Tenryukyo Onsen, with views down into the canyon from the rooms, the dining room and the lobby alike. Every room has its own onsen bath: most open half outdoors onto the gorge, a couple have a cypress tub or a goemon-style tub instead. The shared indoor bath is lit by daylight off the canyon greenery, and switches between the men's and women's sides each day. The water is soft and silky on the skin, the kind of soak that finishes a day spent looking at the river below.
