Yamahiko is a kaiseki ryokan (割烹旅館, kappou ryokan) in the pine woods above Azumino, with separate indoor and open-air stone baths for men and women, plus a private bath that can be booked on top of them. The spring water travels about 19 kilometers from its source before reaching the tubs, and arrives soft on the skin rather than sharp. The open-air bath looks out at red pine trunks, with the moon and stars visible after dark. True to its name, the inn is built as much around its kaiseki dinners of local ingredients as around its baths.
