Yutagawa Onsen Masuya Ryokan

The three private lock-and-soak baths (kashikiri) are free to use whenever one is open, no reservation needed. One, Kodai-hinoki-no-yu (古代檜の湯), is built from rare old-growth hinoki cypress; the other two, Ume-no-yu (梅の湯) and Take-no-yu (竹の湯), are known for how deep their tubs run. The water itself is colorless and odorless, kept pleasantly lukewarm rather than hot, and feels soft on the skin. The ryokan also runs the only drinking-water tap in Yutagawa Onsen, by the entrance to its dining room. It's a small six-room wooden ryokan in a quiet corner of Yutagawa Onsen, family-run and deliberately unshowy, more like staying with relatives than checking into a hotel. It reopened in 2023 after a full renovation, now run as a sister property to two other ryokan in the same hot-spring town. The kitchen keeps to home-style Shonai cooking, and in season it serves bamboo shoots the owners dig themselves from their own grove.
