About
Hayato Ryokan is a small ryokan in Yutagawa Onsen with about three hundred years of history behind it. The indoor bath, split for men and women, is snug enough for only a couple of bathers at a time, but water travels straight from the nearby source with no need for added heat or dilution, so the bath stays flowing fresh. During the Boshin War the Shinchougumi (新徴組), an Edo police corps serving under the Shonai domain, made this inn their headquarters, and the lobby still holds letters and other items from that time. The current owner also holds certification as a yamabushi (山伏), a mountain ascetic in the region's tradition.
