About

Matsuya sits right on the Kinugawa River, with a rock-built open-air bath that looks straight out over the gorge and an indoor bath behind glass walls with the same river view; both are split into separate baths for men and women. A private bath can be booked by the hour for families or couples, and a few guest rooms come with their own open-air tub. The spring is a mild alkaline water, clear and smooth on the skin. Inside, the ryokan has an old-fashioned, almost retro feel, with art and doll displays through its halls and lounge, and both rooms and lobby look straight onto the river and the hills around it.

A ryokan above the gorge in Kinugawa. In good condition, the interior theme is dolls and figurines, a little creepy, they are everywhere. The whole place is like a maze, I kept getting confused about which floor I was on and which wing I was in. Baths: rotenburo (41) and an indoor bath (42). Soft alkaline water. There is a sauna, but no cold bath. Although the rotenburo is right in front of the gorge, it is hidden by trees, so you can only hear the river. Still, it is very pleasant and green. There is a kashikiri barrel roten for 3300 yen for 45 minutes. It was broken, so I could not use it. The food is standard kaiseki. The room was clean, with a view of the gorge, very beautiful. The ryokan has a room with a private rotenburo.
