Tohan Goya Iwayukisawa is a small, six-room pension right at the edge of the ski slope in Norikura Kogen, close enough that guests can ski straight up to the door. Despite the name, which means "climbing hut," it isn't a mountain refuge: it's a warm, home-style inn with a separate bathing building holding two small, deep tubs, each bookable as a private kashikiri (貸切) bath. The water runs unheated, piped straight from the local Yukawa (湯川) spring with a light sulfur note, and it arrives properly hot rather than lukewarm. There's an outdoor tent sauna as well. The building was once a Swiss-style inn called Hotel Garni Laurierhof (ローリーホフ) under earlier ownership. New owners took it over and renamed it, keeping the alpine-chalet feel. The current owner is a mountain climber and hunter who ages and cooks his own hunted game, serving it as French-course dinners.
