滝の湯旅館
Mountain ryokan in Sukagawa with a wood-fired bath
Closed on Mondays (if Monday is a national holiday, open that day and closed the following Tuesday), and closed both Monday and Tuesday on the third Monday of each month. Day bathing appears to take place before the 15:00 overnight check-in; call the inn ahead to confirm.
Heated tap water, not a natural hot spring
The bath uses heated well water that does not meet the legal onsen standard.
Shower, wash stations, soap and shampoo provided
On-site or nearby parking available
A ryokan in the green hills on the west side of Sukagawa. The bath is filled with clear, odorless well water that is heated over a custom-made wood-fired boiler, and the inn is upfront that it does not count as onsen water under the law. The family who run it say the soft, wood-heated water is easy on the skin. Shower water is wood-heated too, and body soap and shampoo are set out. Rooms are a mix of Japanese-style and twin rooms, and one twin room looks out on a waterfall. There is an irori hearth room off the dining hall, a wood stove in the entrance in winter, and covered parking.
