Wakatake is a ryokan in Yutagami, a small hot spring area at the foot of Mount Gomado in Niigata. The indoor bath has a tatami floor, a rare touch the inn markets as gentle and safe for kids and older guests, and the open-air bath is built from natural stone in a garden setting. The water in both is clear and faintly salty, and you can also drink it at a small fountain by the open-air bath. Local tradition traces the spring to mountain ascetics who trained on Gomado and used its water to recover from their practice, and it has been run as a bathing cure ever since. There is also a day-use plan that pairs a bath with lunch in a private room, for visitors who just want to stop by without staying the night.
