About
Taiseiyu is a small neighborhood sento in Yunokawa, Hakodate's old hot-spring district, sitting right behind the tram stop. The bath is just three connected tubs, arranged from hottest to coolest, kept full of fresh natural spring water. The water runs remarkably hot, hot enough that regulars often run the tap into a tub to cool it down before getting in. It's clear, salty and faintly bitter, with the slight stickiness of a seaside spring. The bathhouse itself is plain and unadorned, popular with older locals, and worth a stop if you want to feel how hot a proper sento can get.
