Oyu (大湯) is the communal bathhouse of Yamada Onsen (山田温泉), a spring town that dates back some 200 years. The bathhouse is an old wooden building with a curved Momoyama-style gable. Inside it is indoor baths only, with no open-air bath. The tubs run at different temperatures, from a lukewarm one to a properly hot one, so it is easiest to start lukewarm and work your way up. The water is clear with a sulfur smell and plenty of dark flakes drifting in it, and the taps at the washing stations are opened with a wooden tag. It is a local bath: quiet at times, sometimes empty, and bathers tend to keep it short. The rest room is not in the bathhouse but on the second floor of the Spa Wine Center across the road.
