Bokusuien is a small hot spring inn in Norikura Kogen with milky, sulfur-scented water that's piped down from about 2,000 meters up Mount Norikura. There are two indoor baths and two wood-framed open-air baths, kept separate for men and women. Several guests mention soaking there after dark, under a full sky of stars. Part of the inn is an old farmhouse moved here from Niigata, its thick beams carrying close to two centuries of history, set beside a newer wing with mountain-view rooms. A couple run the place themselves, cooking and looking after guests directly, and many people come back again and again.
