About

Shohoen (樅峰苑) has been standing in the Kowakubi (強首) valley since 1917 and is registered as a tangible cultural property. The main indoor bath, a cypress-fitted hall, runs kakenagashi with the inn's own spring water, which comes out brownish and noticeably salty. Private outdoor baths for lodging guests look out onto a fir tree estimated to be over 380 years old. The inn is a member of the Nihon Hito o Mamoru Kai (日本秘湯を守る会), the association of remote traditional hot-spring inns. Day-use bathing is available in the indoor bath only.
