A blended source combining the Shinyu No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 wells in the village of Nozawa Onsen, sampled at the inlet of the Shinyu community bathhouse rather than at the wellhead. The certificate classifies it as an alkaline simple sulfur spring: the water runs faintly milky and carries the soft rotten-egg note of hydrogen sulfide. Mineralization is light, so nothing about it bites — but the alkalinity delivers the slippery feel, and a generous helping of metasilicic acid backs it up, placing this squarely in Japan's beauty-water family.

About

Shin-yu (真湯) is one of 13 sotoyu (外湯), the communal bathhouses managed by the yu-nakama community of Nozawa Onsen village. It has a single indoor bath for each gender, with a basic washing area. The sulfur water here is known to shift between milky white, emerald green, and clear, earning the bath the nickname Goshiki-no-yu (五色の湯), meaning the five-color bath. Entry is free; there is a donation box at the entrance. Bring your own soap and towel.

828. Shinyu Hot Spring, Nozawa Onsen, Nagano An old-school onsen. Free of charge. The stated hours are 06:00 to 22:00. They stamp the Nozawa Onsen Shuin Meguri stamp. No staff, no shower. The bath photo from the internet matches. Indoor bath. The water is cloudy, pale green with black mineral deposits. The temperature is 43.5. It is easy to breathe inside, but in winter it was cold in the room. 17.01.2026
