Hotel Higuchiken sits in Funagoya onsen (船小屋温泉) in Chikugo, Fukuoka, with its baths looking out over the Yabe River and a stand of camphor trees said to be over 350 years old. The main bath is split by gender into two rooms, Nodoka-yu (長閑湯) for men and Hanagoromo-yu (花ごろも湯) for women, both facing that view. Guests can also book a private half-open-air bath with its own barrel sauna and a cold plunge fed by carbonated spring water, the same water the whole onsen area is known for. The hotel has been run by the same family since 1886, now in its fifth generation, and hosted the Showa Emperor during his postwar tour of the country, along with a run of writers and prime ministers over the decades. It keeps a kaiseki restaurant, Kura (蔵), alongside the baths.
