A blended sulfur spring at Ginzan Onsen, drawn from three wells of the local spring cooperative (No. 2, No. 3 and No. 6) and classified as a sulfur-bearing sodium chloride-sulfate water. Free hydrogen sulfide gives it the characteristic H₂S note, while chloride adds a salty edge and sulfate a quiet body; the water is neutral and moderately mineralized at 2,268 mg/kg. The source runs at 66.5 °C, among Japan's hottest, and a generous 109.4 mg/kg of metasilicic acid places it in Japan's beauty-water family. The posted notice singles out atopic dermatitis, psoriasis vulgaris, chronic eczema and pyoderma among the spring-type indications.

Notoya sits on Ginzan Onsen's small riverside street in a wooden main building completed in the Taisho era (1921), now a nationally registered tangible cultural property. The signature bath is the cave bath, dokutsu-buro (洞窟風呂): the inn's original spring source, used since it opened and today run as a private, reserved bath, with salty, sulfur-tinged water. There are also separate large indoor baths for men and women, each with its own attached outdoor bath. A hillside bath overlooking Shirogane Falls, Shirogane-no-taki (白銀の滝), sits up a long staircase; it closes through the winter, roughly December to April, when the snow shuts the path. Notoya belongs to the Nihon Hitou wo Mamoru Kai (日本秘湯を守る会), the association for Japan's secluded hot-spring inns, and its gaslit, Taisho-style facade is part of what gives Ginzan Onsen's riverside row its look after dark.

750. Notoya Ryokan, Ginzan Onsen, Yamagata (pt.1) ★★ A well-known ryokan in the popular Ginzan Onsen. Judging by the number of people lining up to take photos with it in the background, it is definitely the most popular spot in the village. From lunchtime until evening, there is always someone taking photos in front of the hotel, and during peak hours there are long lines of Chinese tourists. When Ginzan Onsen is described as one of the onsen that supposedly “inspired Miyazaki” for Spirited Away, people usually mean the village as a whole, but in a narrower sense I would say this ryokan fits that description. I stayed overnight in a room with a window facing the main street. I took the half-board option, breakfast and dinner, with meals served in a separate room, and the food itself was quite good. It is included in the list of Hitou “secret” onsen. Most of the staff were Japanese, and there were no issues with service. Overall, after the bustle on the street, everything inside the ryokan was calm and unhurried. There were no particular tourist drawbacks or imbalances either, everything was just as it should be in a ryokan. If you are choosing accommodation in Ginzan Onsen, I would recommend considering it. It is the most in-demand building in the village and a Hitou, but inside the ryokan itself everything is traditional and proper, without being affected by the downsides of hyper-tourism in Ginzan Onsen. 08.01.2026 09.01.2026

750. Notoya Ryokan, Ginzan Onsen, Yamagata (pt.2) ★★ About the onsen: 1. Private cave bath in the basement. Underground and atmospheric. The water is a little cloudy, with a slight greenish tint. The bath is divided into two parts by a boulder, the temperature is 42 on one side and 41.5 on the other. It is easy to breathe inside, it is cool in winter, and there is a proper onsen smell, a bit stale. 2. Public bath. 2.1. Indoor bath. The water is a little cloudy, with a slight greenish tint. The temperature is 43-43.5. It is easy to breathe inside. 2.2. Outdoor wooden bath on a small balcony. The view is very limited through a tall fence, so there is basically no view. The water is a little cloudy, with a slight greenish tint. The temperature is 42 in the evening and 44 in the morning. The ryokan also has another outdoor bath, but it is available only from May to November, outside the winter period. So I did not get into it. 08.01.2026 09.01.2026
