Drinking Spring

About

A well of natural sparkling water in the hamlet of Ōshio — soft, cold and lightly carbonated — which visitors draw themselves into their own containers. In the Meiji era a company was founded here to ship it to Europe with a German partner; today a small plant beside the well bottles it, restaurants buy it, and it was served as the mineral water of the 2019 G20 summit. The shaft is deep and holds a heavy layer of carbon dioxide gas: two people died in it in August 2019 after losing consciousness while drawing water, and the railing restored that October is not decorative. Draw from the rim, do not lean in.

The most interesting drinking spring I’ve seen in Japan. Real natural soda straight from underground, with a mineral taste. Just like the mineral water from my childhood. The building is in front of a forest with huge trees. There’s a shrine nearby and a small bottling plant. It’s sold in many places in Fukushima. Free, you can fill up bottles. There’s parking.
