Umaji Onsen is a small onsen inn in the village of Umaji, in the mountains of Kochi along the Yasuda River. The bath is modest in size, an indoor hall plus a small open-air corner, both looking out over the river and the hills. The water is smooth and a little slick, leaving skin feeling soft after a soak, and there's also a family bath you can book for a private soak. Guest rooms are log-cabin style, and the restaurant serves river fish alongside dishes built around yuzu, the village's signature product. The approach is along narrow mountain roads, and the place has a quiet, out-of-the-way feel.
