Ichifusa Kanko Hotel

Ichifusa Kanko Hotel is a small ryokan at Yuyama onsen (湯山温泉), at the foot of Mt. Ichifusa (市房山) in Kumamoto's Mizukami village. Its indoor bath is fed by its own spring, piped straight from a source that wells up by the parking lot and kept flowing fresh, with a faint sulfur scent and water that leaves skin smooth and slightly slippery. There is no rotenburo or sauna, just two indoor tubs, one slightly cool and one slightly hot, and the cooler one is the point: soak long and let the tension drain out instead of rushing through a hot bath. Days here move slowly. The lobby has a wood stove and old sofas, a reading room holds books on mountains and hot springs, and a wooden deck looks over the garden; every second floor room has its own view of the surrounding mountains. Meals center on wild mountain vegetables (sansai, 山菜) foraged nearby, and the inn runs its own nature outings, foraging trips, river fishing, firefly watching, that make it as much a base for the Ichifusa foothills as a place to just stay and do nothing.
