Hotel Shoho sits on a low rise above Matsumoto, in the Utsukushigahara hot-spring area, with views of the Japan Alps and the old castle town from the guest rooms and one of the two bathing halls. Both halls pair an indoor bath with a rotenburo, and there's also a low-temperature sauna and a foot bath. Three private baths can be reserved separately, one of them garden-style, and several room types come with their own onsen bath and the same view. It's a large hotel with a wide range of room types, and reviews keep coming back to the staff's warmth and the quality of the Shinshu beef at dinner.
