Kurashita no Yu (倉下の湯) is a day-use outdoor bath in Hakuba village, with no indoor pool at all. The single rotenburo sits under a half-roof so a little rain is no problem, and on clear days the Northern Alps stretch out in front of you from the tub. The water is brown and distinctly salty, run as kakenagashi (free-flowing, no recirculation or added water). The name comes from the old Shio no Michi (塩の道), the historic salt-trade road that passed through Hakuba, and the spring's own salty character. The spring was drilled in 1993 and the bath has been running as a day-use facility since 1994. Tattoos are welcome.
