A ryokan at Tsue-tate Onsen (杖立温泉) in Kumamoto, in operation since 1843. The open-air baths face the river and include rock pools, a waterfall shower (utaseyu, 打たせ湯), and a natural steam bath powered by spring vapors. Guests staying overnight have access to private outdoor baths and rooms with their own open-air tubs overlooking the river. The inn runs as a Japanese-style auberge (wa-fu oberuju, 和風オーベルジュ), taking a small number of groups per night and pairing each stay with seasonal kaiseki meals.
