A sulfur-bearing sodium spring that stacks sulfate, bicarbonate and chloride in that order. The water itself runs colorless and clear, but a moderate hydrogen sulfide note rises off it and a sulfurous taste lingers on the tongue — the unmistakable rotten-egg signature of H₂S. It is weakly alkaline and soft on the skin, moderately mineralized with noticeable body, and carries enough metasilicic acid to sit in Japan's beauty-water family, leaving the kind of thin silica film that makes skin feel smoother afterwards. At the source it also ranks among Japan's hottest natural waters.

About

Taki-no-yu (滝の湯) is one of 13 traditional communal baths (sotoyu, 外湯) dotted around Nozawa Onsen village, sitting uphill at the northern edge. The small wooden bathhouse has two separate entrances for men and women, and the single tub inside is fed by a continuously flowing sulfur spring whose water turns a distinctive emerald green. There is no soap or shampoo here, and the space fits only a handful of bathers at a time. A short walk uphill, the views toward the surrounding mountains open up as you arrive. Entry is free, with a donation box at the door.

826. Takinoyu Hot Spring, Nozawa Onsen, Nagano ★ An old-school onsen. Free of charge. The stated hours are 05:00 to 21:00. They stamp the Nozawa Onsen Shuin Meguri stamp. No staff, no shower. Indoor bath. The water is clear with a lot of black and white mineral deposits. Temperature is 45. It is easy to breathe inside, but in winter the room was cold. A rare and unusual mix of different mineral deposits in the water. 17.01.2026
