Last entry 19:00 (must leave by 20:00). Weekend and holiday day-use bathing requires advance reservation via the official day-use plan on the hotel's website. The big open-air bath runs on reduced water most Tuesdays until around 18:00 for scheduled cleaning.
Adults ¥2,500 on weekdays, ¥2,800 on weekends and holidays (towel set included). Ages 3 through elementary school ¥1,000; ages 0 to 2 free. On weekdays, towel-set rental is an extra ¥300.

Foot BathMidorinokaze Resort Kitayuzawa is a big Noguchi Kanko (野口観光) group hotel set in old-growth forest at Kitayuzawa Onsen. Bathing is the main event here: a large open-air bath, which the hotel calls one of the biggest in Japan, where clear nights bring out a sky full of stars right over the water, and a circuit of twenty scented baths (yuzu, apple, hyaluronic acid among them) strung along a covered walkway through the trees, lit up after dark. Inside there is a hall with a waterfall bath, a cypress-wood tub, and jet baths, plus a renovated sauna with a cold plunge, and a few room categories come with their own indoor bath for private soaking. The water is clear and odorless, plain rather than mineral-heavy. That signature outdoor bath actually predates the current resort, carried over from the hotel's earlier years as Meisuitei (名水亭). Day-use bathing is available too, not just overnight stays.

During Golden Week, my girlfriend surprised me by booking this resort. It is located between Lake Toya and Lake Shikotsu. The main pride of the hotel is its huge rotenburo (outdoor hot spring bath) of 500 square meters. However, I liked the numerous colored baths even more. There is, of course, a sauna and day-use facilities. I also really liked the hotel itself; the breakfast was splendid.
