Steam SaunaShinkai Onsen is an old neighborhood sento down a narrow street in Matsuyama's Yugun area. The main stone-built tub is split into electric, bubble and deep-soak sections, with a separate, cooler rock-style tub warmed by a back jet, a wet steam sauna, and a cold plunge; a strong dry sauna in the changing room draws sauna fans from further afield. Despite the name, this isn't hot-spring water, just regular heated water, which is common enough among Japan's older sento. The building is old but kept spotlessly clean, and a coin laundry next door makes it a favorite stop for cyclists and other travelers passing through.

Indoor area. It is fine to breathe inside. 1. Bubble bath. The water is clear, temperature 41.5. 2. Two denki-buro. 3. Rectangular bath with clear water, temperature 43.5. 4.
