Genuine hot-spring water is piped only to the Onsen Rotenburo Twin Room and the Cabana Room. Other room types with a private bath use heated tap water instead of spring water.

Kaike Shogetsu is a 19-room ryokan on the Sea of Japan coast, with its main bath and open-air bath on the fifth floor, 27 meters above the water, looking straight out over the sea. Away from the main building are four separate private baths, each different: a wooden barrel tub, a rock bath, an open-air garden bath, and an indoor granite bath, all fed by Kaike Onsen's hot-spring water. The water leaves a light film on the skin that holds the warmth in well after you step out. The ryokan opened in 1927, in the early years of Kaike Onsen, unusual among hot springs for having its source rising up out of the sea itself. It has kept to its original 19 rooms ever since, following the first proprietress's rule to stay small enough to know every guest personally.
