Shimonoseki Seiryu

A natural hot spring day spa set inside a shopping complex on the edge of Shimonoseki, with the scale of a super sento: an indoor bath, several outdoor tubs including one facing a stand of bamboo, a jet bath, a shallow reclining bath and a cold plunge, plus two sauna rooms of different styles. The water itself is understated as a hot spring, so the draw here is the range of baths and saunas rather than a dramatic mineral spring. Beyond the baths there is a rock-bed sauna (ganbanyoku), private family baths bookable by the hour, a restaurant, an esthetic salon and a free tatami rest area with massage chairs. It reads less like a hot spring retreat and more like a well-kept neighborhood bathhouse people return to on a regular basis.
