Yusa

Yusa is a small ryokan at Kawatabi Onsen, on the eastern edge of Naruko Onsenkyo in Miyagi. Guests can use a reserved open-air bath, Meiso no Yu (瞑想の湯), set in a garden that changes through the seasons: fresh green in early summer, maple leaves in autumn, snow in winter. It's free for overnight guests, who can return as many times as they like when it's open, and there's also an indoor bath for soaking without reserving anything. The water itself runs reddish and faintly cloudy, smooth on the skin, and locals say it keeps you warm long after you've dried off. The inn has a homey feel: rice and vegetables the owners grow themselves, hand-cut soba, and homemade doburoku and pickles turn up at meals.
