A blended source pooled in storage tank #1 at Shuzenji on the Izu Peninsula, classified as an alkaline simple thermal spring. At pH 8.51 the water has the slippery, soft-on-the-skin feel of the Japanese 'beauty-water' family. The wellhead runs hot (60.1 °C) — among the warmer Shuzenji sources — and a modest 63 mg/kg of metasilicic acid adds a touch of silky finish.

All five baths here draw on the same Shuzenji spring: colorless, clear water that's gentle on the skin. The ground-floor bath, Kobo-no-yu (弘法の湯), was renovated in 2024 with a Finnish-style sauna and a cold plunge for a proper totonoi (整い) round, and looks out over cherry trees in the garden come spring. The reservable private baths each have a different character: Ibuki is pool-sized and kept on the cool side so you can actually swim, and Satori is a dim, cave-like room lit by a small fire for quiet soaking. A third, barrier-free bath opens onto a small garden, though it is out of service for repairs. Four of the six room types, mostly the suites, come with their own open-air bath as well. According to the local founding legend, the priest Kukai passed through about 1200 years ago and, moved by a son washing his sick father in the cold Katsuragawa, struck the riverside rock with a Buddhist ritual implement and brought up hot water instead. That's the spring the ryokan still draws from. It's an old-school, upscale inn on the river with mountain views from many rooms, a quiet, private atmosphere guests often mention, and a foot-bath terrace with a fire pit that stays open through the night for stargazing.
