About
Ryokan Yamatoya stands at the foot of Mount Eboshi, in the Akayu onsen town of Yamagata. The two shared baths are a rock bath and a marble hall styled after a Roman bath, and the men's and women's sides swap between them. The water is hot and faintly salty, smooth enough on the skin that locals call it bijin-yu (美人湯), beauty water. Three room types, Yamato-no-ma (大和の間), Meiboku-no-ma (銘木の間) and Irori-no-ma (囲炉裏の間), each have their own onsen tub in the room. The inn has been running for more than three hundred years, and its halls are hung with paintings and ceramics, an unusual sight for a hot spring ryokan, alongside the more usual dining rooms.
